The Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a great IPL 2023 season. The David Warner-led side was already on the back foot before the current season began, with regular captain Rishabh Pant ruled out due to a terrible event on December 30, 2022. DC has struggled for momentum since the start of the season, and despite some excellent wins, they have been the first team to be eliminated this season after two back-to-back losses in the final week.
Ricky Ponting was appointed as the DC head coach prior to the 2018 IPL season (when the franchise was known as the Delhi Daredevils), and the franchise has performed well (making the playoffs three times and playing in their first-ever final in 2020). Ponting’s team management, on the other hand, has been reprimanded for their squad composition, underutilization of key players, and other difficulties in IPL 2023. As a result, Sourav Ganguly, a former Indian all-rounder, has been recommended as DC’s next head coach.
WILL GANGULY BE THE NEXT DC COACH?
“The presence of Sourav Ganguly in the dugout in Delhi is significant.” I feel Dada can make a major difference on this team if he is given the responsibility of coach as well. Dada is well-versed in the psychology of Indian athletes. He knows how to manage a locker room, and Delhi should capitalize on that. “At the time of the coin toss, Warner stated that his team has begun preparing for the next season, and in this context, it would not be incorrect to see Ganguly in a different role,” Pathan noted.
Ganguly served as a team advisor for the DC setup in IPL 2019 before returning as the Director of Cricket before to IPL 2023. Ganguly has captained IPL clubs like the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the now-defunct Pune Warriors (PWI), but he has never coached. It will be interesting to watch if the DC team management remains intact following their terrible performance in the IPL 2023. Ganguly could be an excellent substitute if Ponting is sacked.
Only time will tell whether DC will back their embattled club management or make positive changes ahead of the IPL 2024.
